Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Borthwick Castle, we recognize the profound impact that businesses can have on the environment, no matter the size. That’s why we are dedicated to integrating sustainable practices into every aspect of our operations. From minimising our carbon footprint to promoting ethical sourcing, we strive to make a positive difference in the world while delivering exceptional products/services to our customers.

We routinely conduct audits to ensure best sustainable practices are always maintained and further improvements are investigated.
Some specific examples as to our sustainability improvements are:

We heat and provide hot water to the castle exclusively from our Biomass boiler system. This runs on sustainably sourced wood chips from the local area to minimise transportation emissions and help support the local economy. Our service centre has also been installed with provisions to easily connect further renewable energy sources in the future.

We separate all plastic, metal, glass and food waste from our general waste which is then recycled. Food waste is taking it to anaerobic digestion plants, where it is converted into biogas that can be used for electricity, heat or even biofuel for transport. Our waste cooking oil is collected and recycled to create high quality biofuels for transport.

Replacing of internal fittings

Within the last 10 years, new fully insulated heating pipework has been installed throughout the castle. Heating is carefully monitored and maintained so that the building is heated precisely to daily requirements.

Windows have also been replaced with A listing compliant double glazed units through the entire building to enhance peak thermal efficiency. All internal doors have also been replaced with self-closing solid European Oak counterparts with draught seals.

We have recently taken the steps to replace mini toiletries with larger refillable bottles. This helps reduce housekeeping plastic waste by over 70%. Our laundry supplier is only 4 miles away and uses some of the most modern and efficient machines available to clean all of our laundry.

All our External and Internal lighting has recently been converted to LED technology, reducing lighting energy consumption by 90%. Lights are turned on internally only when the room is occupied. Staff turn off lights when leaving Bedrooms.

We use the finest locally sourced ingredients from our area. This serves dually to support local suppliers and farming, and to reduce carbon emissions incurred by transportation of goods.

In 2024, we are introducing our own composting system to our walled garden, recycling kitchen waste such as eggshells, coffee grounds, used tea and fruit & vegetable scraps. This will be used to nourish our vegetable planters and help grow our own produce to go back in our kitchen.

Continuous Improvement

Monitoring and Evaluation: We regularly monitor our sustainability performance and evaluate our progress towards our goals. By tracking key metrics and conducting regular assessments, we can identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to further enhance our sustainability efforts.

We are committed to innovation and continuous improvement. Whether it’s developing and sourcing new eco-friendly products, optimising our processes, or implementing new available technologies, we are always seeking new ways to reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainability.

At Borthwick Castle, sustainability is not just a goal—it’s a core value that guides everything we do. By prioritising environmental stewardship, ethical sourcing, and continuous improvement, we are working towards a more sustainable future for generations to come.
